The best part about this option is that the company will transport your luggage for you, so you do not need to lug it along with you.
There is a downside to riding a motorbike to your destination though and that is that you cannot go all the way to Phong Nha via the motorbike. Instead, you must drop your motorbike off in Hue and then take the bus or the train the rest of the way to Phong Nha. This is not too bad, because at least you can spend some time exploring the country. However, you must plan an entire day for the ride, as well as spending a night in Hue, so you would get into Phong Nha later than you might want to.
2. Take the Train
Taking the train from Hoi An to Phong Nha normally takes eight hours and it includes a bus trip as well. The first part of your journey will include a bus ride from Hoi An to Da Nang. The cost for the bus ride is quite reasonable at 20,000 VND, but you can spend a little more if you are in a hurry and want to take a shuttle or taxi to the train station in Da Nang instead. The length of the bus ride is approximately forty-five minutes.
Once you have arrived at the Da Nang train station, you will board the train to Dong Hoi. The cost for this ride is currently 185,000 VND. While there are many different trains leaving for Dong Hoi, I recommend that you choose the one that leaves around 10 in the morning, because it arrives in Dong Hoi six hours later, which is perfect for catching the four or five o’clock bus to your final destination.
As soon as your train arrives in Dong Hoi, it will be time to board the bus for the journey to Phong Nha. This portion of the trip will take between an hour and an hour and a half for a cost of 35,000 VND. You must also plan on paying 25,000 VND for the taxi ride from the Dong Hoi train station to the local bus station. If you want to skip this last bus ride, and arrive in Phong Nha a little faster, you could always splurge for a taxi ride.
3. Take the Bus
If the thought of switching modes of transportation constantly for your trip from Hoi An to Phong Nha is too much, then I recommend that you simply take the bus the entire way. You will need to switch buses when you arrive in Hue, but that is minimal to the changes that are required in the options above.
The total time for the two bus rides is approximately eight and a half hours and you will find yourself on the Hanh Café bus before transferring to the Hung Thanh bus. The Hanh Café bus departs from an area near the Hoi An post office and the location for the next bus is where the first one stops in Hue.
If you do not mind arriving a little later in Phong Nha, you may want to consider taking a bus that stops at both the DMZ Bridge and the VincMoc tunnels, as those are two destinations that are always considered must-see in Vietnam.
